Limited Series Features
- Domaine Lupier La Dama$58.00
The pinnacle of Grenache-based wine in Spain: 'La Dama' is a stunning fusion of an Atlantic climate, mountain viticulture, and spectacular soils which produces a wild expression of the grape, yet it is refined with soft tannin and the finesse of its makers. This extraordinary wine is now a rare gem. Its creators, the brilliant duo of Enrique Basarte and Elisa Úcar, have bid farewell to the production, making it a truly limited edition that must not be missed.
- Testalonga I am the Ninja Sparkling Chenin Blanc$39.00
Yummy & fresh sparkling Chenin Blanc from Swartland, South Africa with super fresh fruit flavors of green apple and white pear and a light, fine, creamy fizz.
Retail Email Features
- Alma de Cattleya Chardonnay$31.00
Born in Colombia, Bibiana Gonzalez-Rave knew she was going to be a winemaker at the age of 14, and set out to do just that. Her wine education in France is reflected in this elegant Chardonnay that spends 15 months aging on the lees in French oak. The fresh notes of white pear, jasmine, honey, melon and lemon curd pair beautifully with the caramel popcorn, rich texture and body that come from the time spent in barrels.
- Baia's Wine Gvantsa's Wine Aladasturi$34.00
This Aladasturi comes courtesy of Gvantsa, who heads up all red wine-making at the winery, while Baia takes care of the white varietals. With no filtration, and only the smallest amount of sulfur added, this certainly fits the week's motif - as clean as it gets. Red berries with medium spicy tannins would make the perfect pair to any lamb or pork dish, or even roasted vegetables.
- Carriage House Debutant Pet-Nat Honey Apple Wine$17.00
Using only Michigan apples and fermented using the natural yeast from the apples' skins, winemaker Kyla Evans took inspiration from a recipe by famed chef Jacques Pépin to craft her debut wine and the result is pretty great. This would make the perfect aperitif, and could even stand up to a full meal. Consider taking a detour from wine the next time you're looking to pick up something special to drink.
- Catalina Ugarte Pais$29.00
Catalina Ugarte is part of the new young winemaker movement in Chile, making Pais wine from vines that are over 100 years old. (Some Pais vines in Chile are even up to 300 years old!) Slightly smokey, wild flowers, wild blueberries and strawberries, with subtle tannins, this is an encapsulation of the Chilean wine scene in a bottle, and somehow both crushable and ready for a steak.
- Chateau Bel-Air Eiffel Graves de Vayres Heritiers Gustave Eiffel$46.00
Seeing as how the Chateau has been in the Eiffel family for over a century, it turns out the family did more than just produce iconic monuments, as this beautiful Cabernet Franc-dominant Bordeaux can attest to. Black fruit, spices and cocoa are supported by a rich mouthfeel and a great tannic structure. This is a fantastic cold winter night wine.
- Christina St. Laurent$26.00Out of stock
St. Laurent, one of the principal Austrian red varieties is carbonically macerated for this wine, which to you non-wine geeks out there means that it is made in as juicy and fruit-forward a way as possible. Think of the juiciest Pinot Noir you’ve ever had, and you’re pretty much there - cherry, cranberry, a little spice, and a little earthy.
- Clos Fornelli "La Robe d'Ange" Blanc$30.00Out of stock
Full of texture, minerality, freshness, and quite possibly the hint of banana pudding in there somewhere, this is a great example of what Corsican wines have to offer.
- Clos Ornasca Ajaccio Rouge Corsica$35.00Out of stock
What's interesting is that it's silky smooth, with smoky berry flavors and yet there's also a lightness and brightness about it - either drink this at room temp and embrace the deep flavors, or pop it in the fridge for a completely different experience.
- Detroit Vineyards Field of Dreams$35.00
The Cabernet Franc makes itself known with raspberry and blueberry notes, while the Merlot brings blackberry jam, black cherry and fresh tarragon to the party. Some vanilla and spice from the oak aging really brings this wine together. While Michigan wine is never going to be inky or "bold" because of our climate, this wine has some nice heft to it and great structure.
- Domaine Ciringa Sauvignon Blanc Fosilni Breg Slovenia$32.00Out of stock
In direct violation of the “you get what you pay for” adage, to say the Ciringa wines overdeliver would be doing them a disservice. This wine is world-class and walks its own distinct path among Sauvignon Blancs. The hills of the region, formed by the ancient Pannonian Sea that once covered the area, are covered in limestone and fossils, including the one depicted on the wine’s label. What you get from all of this is a flinty, fresh minerality and a clean citrus character with incredible texture and depth. Sancerre elegance without the Sancerre price!
- Dusted Valley Cabernet Sauvignon$44.00
Why Washington? The two believe that Eastern Washington offers the best balance of old world and new world attributes - where the structure and earthiness of the old world intersects with the ample fruit of the new world - and this wine proves that they might be on to something. Managing to be both expressive and gentle, spiced plums and dark chocolate intertwine with dried herbs and soft tannins. This will make any Cabernet fan happy!
- Elena Walch Gewurztraminer$32.00
Flowers, spices and tropical fruit burst from the glass - you don't need to get your nose in the glass for this one. The full body, in conjunction with the rich aromatics, make this the perfect aperitif wine, standing in nicely for an Aperol spritz or sparkling wine, but will elevate almost any savory appetizers as well as grilled fish and poultry.
- Fakin Malvasia Croatia$23.00
Bursting with overripe pineapple, honeysuckle, and apricots, this wine is anything but buttoned up. Looking at the color you could be forgiven for guessing there was oak or skin contact but no - these grapes have just spent some quality time out in the sun, and that ripeness is apparent in the color of the wine.
- Farmstrong Field Red$29.00
Another Californian wine we're featuring this week that has primarily Southern French grapes, this is mostly juicy, crunchy red-fruited Carignan, supported by Zinfandel and Syrah to round things out with some darker fruits and notes of spice and baker's chocolate. This is a perfect, medium-bodied everyday red, perfect for a night spent in playing a card or board game.
- Grifalco Gricos Aglianico del Vulture Basilicata$23.00
Rich, rustic, earthy wine lovers rejoice - this one's for you. Dark baked fruits, baked red soil and dried herbs for days.
- Imayo Tsukasa Artesian Water Junmai Sake (180ml)$14.00
The Imayo Tsukasa Sake Brewery started in the 1890s, using artesian spring water from nearby Suganadake Mountain, and that is still the case today. As a Junmai, this sake can only consist of rice, water, koji and yeast, so it is as pure and clean a sake as the spring water it's made with. Think green melon and a hint of saltwater spray.
- Jean Paul Brun FRV 100 Sparkling$26.00Out of stock
- Laffourcade Clos des Quarts Quarts de Chaume Dry 2016$42.00
This 7 year-old Chenin Blanc has come to us via the latter scenario. Finally, the fun thing: the wine was vinified completely dry. The end result is a full-bodied, rich wine packed with all of those concentrated flavors you get from late harvest Botrytised grapes, but with none of the sweetness. This, in concert with the bottle's age, results in notes of ripe Anjou pear (makes sense, given the region), honey, almonds, apricot and mango. Enjoy nerding out on this one!
- Lorenza Picpoul$33.00
Classically categorized as "oyster wine", the added depth from the California sunshine makes this Picpoul well-adapted to any situation, and the kiwi, melon and kiss of sea salt found on the palate make this perfect for any moment you find yourself wishing you were seaside.
- Masseria Celentano Cacc'e Mmitte di Lucera Ricaccio Puglia (EXPO)$22.00
- Maysara Jamsheed Pinot Noir Momtazi Vineyard 2015$39.00
We love a Pinot Noir with age on it here at The Royce. And you've gotta respect Moe and Flora Momtazi's choice to release wines when they believe they have fully matured, rather than releasing them chronologically. What this means is that this is drinking beautifully right now, with a fun mocha note that you don't see too often from a Pinot Noir, as well as dried cherries and cinnamon.
- Pellegrino Grillo Il Salinaro$28.00Out of stock
- Pierre Jean Villa Syrah Vin de France$48.00Out of stock
It's possible to sense Pierre Jean's background making wine in Burgundy when trying this wine - there's an elegance reminiscent of high-level Cru Burgundy that mingles with the raw Syrah goodness that draws fans to Northern Rhône wine, and it's pretty wonderful. Somehow both fresh and floral and intense and meaty, this wine's a banger.
- Project K The GV Gruner Veltliner$30.00
This Grüner Veltliner gets the added benefit of a small amount of skin contact - not quite enough to call this an orange wine - giving it not only a beautiful golden hue but added body and an emphasis on Grüner's more exciting characteristics - such as honeydew melon, parsnip and white pepper.
- Santa Julia El Burro Malbec Natural$24.00Out of stock
Deriving its name and label from Julia Zuccardi's brother's childhood animal he would play with, this unique Malbec is made with indigenous yeasts, no intervention and no added sulfites or filtering. The resulting wine is juicy, fresh and pops with plummy goodness, baking spices, cooked dark cherries and a little white pepper too.
- SHED Wine Tickle Tickle Riesling Pet Nat$33.00
Tickle Tickle is 100% Riesling, fermented on its skins for three full weeks, and bottled without filtering. Refreshing, bright and herbaceous with notes of lemongrass, fresh lime and juniper, Shed recommends you drink this as the sun is going down on a warm afternoon, when you aren't quite ready for that glass of red yet.
- Turnbull Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley$70.00
Ripe strawberry and red cherry notes show, thanks to the vineyard surrounding the winery itself. The unique landscape of the Amoenus Vineyard in Calistoga produces grapes with perfectly balanced acidity and a minerality rare for the area. The wine is rounded out with plush ripe dark fruit and spice box notes provided by both the Leopoldina and Fortuna Vineyards (Fun fact, the pre-prohibition Fortuna vineyard was originally sourced by Christian Brothers, before they decided to exclusively produce brandy). The end result is a perfectly-balanced example of Napa Valley Cabernet, and probably a steal for the price.
- Vermillion Red Blend$38.00
We typically think of delicate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay when we think of Santa Barbara, but these hot climate-loving grapes clearly thrive there as well, if this wine is any indication. Wild raspberries and blackberries, dried herbs, clove, fresh rosemary and that signature Syrah earthiness come together nice and neatly here.
- Vostinic Klasnic Skrlet White Croatia$23.00Out of stock
winery VK (Voštinić-Klasnić) is one of the leading champions for the grape, and along with just one or two other winemaking families, is responsible for keeping the grape alive during the Yugoslavian period, when many local grapes were ripped out in favor of more well-known varieties. We owe them a lot of thanks, because the grape drinks exactly like the bottle's label would lead you to believe - pineapple, peaches, apples, a little bit of dried herbs - have this wine on hand for when you need a little splash of summer in your life this winter.
- World's Apart Blewitt Springs Grenache$48.00Out of stock
Compared to the serious, Spanish-like Grenache from the hot Barossa Valley to the north, this example from McLaren Vale really shows the effects of the cooling winds that characterize the region. Those breezes express themselves with a brightness and freshness in the wine, and one could even possibly close their eyes and guess this to be a super-ripe Pinot Noir. Crunchy red fruit, exotic spice, fresh red flowers and hint of freshly-tilled earth basically explode from the glass. If there's another expression of Grenache out there like this, we haven't met it yet. Come say hello to your new favorite wine region.
- Bikicki Sfera Noir Serbia$29.00
The Bikicki (Bee-keetz-kee) Winery is located in the fertile Fruška Gora National Park, where the mineral-rich soils are made up of every major geological period. Fresh and juicy, yet rich and structured, this blend of Pinot Noir with the indigenous Crna Tamjanika (Black Muscat) is an absolute pleasure to drink, with summer berries, dark cherry and spice lingering on the palate long after the sip.

- Domaine Luneau Papin Le Verger Muscadet$28.00Out of stock
We think this is the best Muscadet we have tasted in a long time with it's luxuriously silky texture, round and pleasing with a salty minerality from the rocky soil overlooking the ocean tickling on the forefront of the palate, with notes of preserved lemon, subtle orchard fruit and the slightest hint of fresh-baked bread from the "sur lie" (lees) ageing. Balanced and mind-blowing for it's style.
