• Champagne Antoine Chevalier "Carkonnia", Brut Nature, 2019

Ironically coming from the single-vineyard named “Les Jardins de Meunier”, this Blanc de Blancs definitively has no Pinot Meunier in it, and is simply singing right now. Antoine is a young grower-producer who farms 2.5 hectares of grapes under strict biodynamic principles making singular wines from his favorite parcels. The extra-brut “Carkonnia” is a richer Chardonnay having been vinified and aged for 24 months in wooden barrel. It’s plush and creamy but still electric with a soft and uplifting perlage. It’s a real showstopper, and very limited as only 1200 bottles were produced!

    • Domaine de Montbourgeau, Cremant du Jura, NV

For those of you who want all of the pomp-and-circumstance of a grower champagne but would prefer to stay south of $40, this is your hole in one. The Jura valley has an incredible history of viticulture which can sometimes be confused as one focusing on more oxidative-styled white wines; however, this 100% chardonnay is not that in the least. It is pure and crystalline with tons of aromatic and flavor complexity reminiscent of its more famous sparkling-wine neighbor to the north. The Brut Zero means there is no addition of sugar during secondary fermentation which makes this style laser-focused and mineral-rich. One unique fact about this wine is that the wine always come from one single vintage but are labeled non-vintage. This vintage produced a scant 15,000 bottles which are always allocated.

    • Red Tail Ridge "Pet Nat Rose", Finger Lakes, 2021

Done in the Methode Ancestrale, this wine begins fermentation in stainless steel tank, while it is still fermenting it is put into bottle with the yeast included. The wine continues to ferment in bottle, and because it is closed with a bottle cap, the CO2 that the yeast produces gets trapped and incorporated into the wine, forming a soft, gentle mousse. Aromas of Dried Cranberry, Mandarin Orange, Gummi Cherry, Nutmeg, Tarragon & Mint. Flavors of Ripe Raspberry, Cranberry Juice, and Quince.

    • Rolet "Arbois" Chardonnay, Jura, 2021

This Chardonnay isnÕt your average Jura Chardonnay. What I love about this organic producer is more of a penchant to producing Burgundian-style wines like you find in Meursault more than the abundantly nutty, oxidative style that most associate with most Jura producers. Arbois has the perfect cool-climactic conditions and unique mountainous schist soils to produce top-notch, age-worthy Chardonnays that fly under the radar next to its more popular neighbor Burgundy. Because the Jura valley is so small, production is very low, and prices are not always that much different from what you see from Burgundy, so this is a steal and a fantastic way to experience the region!

Situated beneath the 1er Cru Perrires, "Les Nosroyes" lies on a stony hillside whose name was derived from the old French term "Noieroie," signifying a place planted with walnut trees. The grapes for this wine come from plot planted in 1960 with an East/West orientation, reaching an altitude of 240 meters. Hand-harvested in small pierced boxes, the grapes undergo meticulous vinification processes, including slow and gentle pressing for four hours, followed by 24 hours of settling and racking in 350-liter oak barrels for alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeast. Aging on lees extends for 10 to 12 months, with additional blending in stainless steel vats for 2 to 4 months. The resulting wine displays a pale yellow color with intense aromas of citrus fruits and vine peach on the nose. On the palate, it reveals a beautiful acidity that enhances persistent citrus notes, imparting extra length and complexity to the wine.

IDDA means "she" in the Sicilian dialect, which is the term of endearment and awe with which Sicilians refer to Mount Etna. The palate is consistent and complex, featuring juicy, and refreshing sensations, followed by lightly salty mineral impressions. Its acidity and freshness amplify the fruity-mineral flavors, ending with a lingering aftertaste.

Another volcanic-soiled wine with an average vine age of 30 to 40 years, Staforte is made from a selection of the best Garganega grapes from vineyards in the Monteforte d'Alpone zone and is of such great quality that it can easily cellar for up to 5-10 years. The rollercoaster of aromas and flavors include ripe apples, candied orange peel, crushed rocks, milled white pepper, and mint leaf. This is ideal with nutty cheeses and roasted white fish.

O Poqueno is one of the entry-level wines but will give you a great idea as to why this winery is so famous! If you adore Albarinos from this region, this wine is a must-try.

When supporting in the capacity thatÊLeÊMidiÊdoes, we are offered the more rare bottles, and this 375 mL bottle of PIUS Auslese is one of these gems. This bottle is only produced in years where the rare mold botryitis affects the grapes skins producing a concentrated and honeyed style of wine that are breathtaking in their complexity, and which require an incredible amount of patience during fermentation due to the snail-like pace it takes to complete. The 2022 is a blockbusterÊAusleseÊfilled with papaya, pineapple, grapefruit and honeysuckle with a touch of baking spice at the end.

These are the first Carricante vines planted in the US and overseen by the powerhouse Rhys Vineyards from the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA. This is a single vineyard bottling of Carricante grown on ancient volcanic soils that emulate those from Mt Etna in Sicily. They have made a truly spectacular wine that could easily be confused with a Premier Cru Burgundy with its layers of complexity and elongated finish that is wonderful currently but has great potential to age.

This beautiful Albari–o is the only white wine made by Rosemary Cakebread (yes, of that Cakebread) at her Gallica winery. Seeing both stainless steel and oak during fermentation, this is a layered and complex Albari–o full of white rose and sea salt alongside lime and tropical fruit. This is a phenomenal wine on its own but would also be a great addition to shellfish and sushi.

    • Massican Annia

From Massican, "Tocai Friulano 43%, Ribolla Gialla 34%, Chardonnay 23%. Our flagship white wine blend is sourced from small vineyards around the Napa Valley. The three grape varietals, Tocai Friulano, Ribolla Gialla and Chardonnay, are harvested separately and fermented independently in French Oak and stainless steel tanks until blending six weeks before bottling. The Tocai and Ribolla build the aroma and flavor profile of the wine, while the Chardonnay adds to the wineÕs structure. Annia is fresh and subtle and fulfills the promise set forth years ago to bottle memorable white wines unique among the wines of California."

Ceritas wines transport me to an imaginary world of grape splendor every time I hear the name. Amidst the abundance of 'classic' California Chardonnay, Ceritas stands out redefining this varietal alongside a select few while echoing its noble origins in Burgundy. Crafted by the husband-and-wife team, John Raytek and Phoebe Bass, these wines narrate the story of the land. Sourced from meticulously tended, biodynamically-farmed vineyards that capture California's cool-climate terroir, ÒMarenaÓ shows aromas of ripe orchard fruits, citrus, and delicate florals while the palate unravels vibrant acidity and nuanced minerality seamlessly. Its graceful texture is a result of extended lees aging in neutral barrels revealing the team's meticulous craftsmanship. It will also develop beautifully with extra cellaring. This unique gem is meant to be savored with nothing but a zest for life. Act fast; only 12 bottles were made available!

It's the perfect pairing for quesadillas or grilled veggies!

Anything winemaker Angela Osborne makes, we are big fans of. Angela is a native to New Zealand and came to the cool-climate of Central California focusing solely on the Grenache varietal. This is her way-too-easy to drink rosé that she perfects every year, and 2023 is no exception! Angela’s wines are always mildly extracted and delicate to accentuate the floral nuances and to allow the minerality to shine through. Full of youthful raspberry and strawberry with hints of anise and the sur-lie aging brings out a wonderful creamy texture to complement the bright fruits.

A very unique white made from Palamino grapes grown in coastal Mediterranean soils which lends to the saline texture. Cool diurnal temps helps this wine retain freshness and acidity, while it is aged in used Madeira barrels that give this wine nutty, dried orange flavors. A wine for a complex Portuguese fish stew, Bacalaitos (fried fish balls), or with rosemary encrusted Manchego cheese.

Recognized as a top cru bourgeois in Ferret's 6th edition in 1893, the chateau continues its legacy of excellence. With a terroir of gravelly soil and a cool maritime climate, the wine showcases aromas of dark fruit, spice, and tobacco. Its palate offers ripe blackberry, cassis, and hints of cedar and violet. • Foradori "Sgarzon", Toraldego, Dolomiti, 2021

Elisabetta Foradori's journey in her Òwine lifeÓ resonates as a timeless tale, one where the grape doesn't fall far from the vine or the hand that cultivates it. Foradori's wines, like Elisabetta herself, embody striking elegance, a discerning taste, and a sincere, generous spirit. Despite her early reluctance, Elisabetta's path evolved through a process of intuition leading her to a holistic approach to winemaking. Coming from a tiny 2.5 hectare vineyard, Sgarzon is made from the regionÕs famous thin-skinned red varietal Teroldego. Though this wine may appear light in the glass, it is anything but! Powerful aromas of blood orange, violet, and pine coalesce into tart blue, black, and red fruits in this remarkable addition to ElisabetaÕs creations.

Nerello Mascalase takes center stage in this area with its blended soil types of volcanic ash and sand along with various elevations and microclimates. Embark on a unique journey to Campania with this spectacular 14-year-old wine encapsulating the essence of this ancient volcanic region. Villa Diamante is a relatively new winery in the vast span of Campanian history and theirÊ"Ad Ultimum"Êis an ode to Aglianico, the noble grape of Southern Italy grown in the esteemed DOCG of Taurasi. The wine undergoes an aging process that includes time in Slavonian oak barrels adding depth and character. This method imbues the wine with a complexity that unfolds beautifullyÑa symphony of dark fruits, hints of leather, and a subtle earthiness. On the palate, it boasts robust yet velvety tannins, culminating in a finish that lingers for ages. Pair this gem with hearty dishes like osso buco or aged cheeses.

    • Barbacan "Rosso Alpi Retiche", Valtellina, 2021

In the heart of the Alps in northern Italy rests the Valtellina appellation known for their own unique style of Nebbiolo known locally as Chiavanesca. This 6 hectare family-run estate is lead by a father and his two sons who focus primarily on this varietal along with other indigenous grapes used for blending. This natural wine is a blend of mostly Chivanesca with lesser parts of red and white varietals: R—ssola, Rossolino Rossa, Brugn˜la, Chiavennaschino, Pign˜la, Negrera, and Chiavanesca Blanca (youÕll be tested on these laterÉ). The 70-year-old vines contribute incredible complexity to this light bodied Alpine wine that ferments in concrete seeing no oak. The nose is lifted with aromas of cherries and raspberries with a medium-bodied floral palate expressing well integrated acidity and tannins. This is a great wine for those who like lighter chilled-reds with a fresh and elegant approach. Pairs perfectly with Cave Aged Gruyre or smoked Arctic Char.

    • IDDA Etna Rosso, 2021

Few names evoke the same kind of international allure as Angelo Gaja and Alberto Graci when it comes to the world of Italian wine, and this maiden collaboration is a great example as to why thatÕs true. This blend is crafted from old-vine Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio grown on the southwestern slopes of Mount Etna, capturing the essence of its volcanic terroir. The label is inspired by the lava of the volcano where the vineyards thrive, and "idda," meaning "she" in the regional dialect, is how locals affectionately refer to the maternal volcano. Fermented and aged for 18 months in oak and concrete vats, this wine showcases vibrant aromas of cherry, mulberry, graphite, and spice. On the palate, it delivers bold flavors of bitter cherry and black currant, balanced by a pronounced minerality, and a long, peppery finish.

    • Quinta da Pellada Vinho Tinto, Dao, 2017

The oldest historic records to mention the Quinta da Pellada date back to 1570. The D‹o was awarded DO status in 1908. Alvaro Castro inherited this historic estate in 1980. It's the source of his oldest vines, and best terroir. Like Castro's other reds, this is a field blend, aged for almost two years in 5 year-old french barrels. This is a serious wine of terroir, tightly wound, dense, and layered. It will repay time in the cellar. A pinnacle in the expression of the D‹o, this is not to be missed! Decant if drinking now, or hold through 2030+.

    • Glatzer "Blaufrankisch", Carnuntum, Austria, 2022

Glatzer "BlaufrŠnkisch" is a great example of the rich heritage and exceptional terroir of AustriaÕs Carnuntum region where Walter Glatzer and his family meticulously tend over 50 hectares of organic vineyards. Here, the unique combination of exposition, soil, and microclimate creates optimal conditions for viticulture, with the vines benefiting from the contrasting influences of the warm Pannonian plain, cooling currents of the Danube, and protective forests. The result is wines characterized by vibrant freshness and brightness, attributed to the region's wide diurnal temperature swings. Glatzer's BlaufrŠnkisch shines as the star of the estate, undergoing gentle maceration and fermentation before aging in large casks to enhance complexity and depth. Crack this open for a picnic after being chilled for a spell.

    • Desire Lines "Sky Vineyard" Syrah, Mt Veeder, 2022

Wowza. This single-vineyard Syrah is special. Just 50 cases of this wine were crafted by Cody Rasmussen, the associate winemaker at Napa's Bedrock Winery. He and his wife started this small project in 2018 and this is a name to look for in the world of modern Napa wine. The nose is pure crushed cherries, pine sap, and the aromatic essence of the native plant Yerba Santa. This monumental wine delivers a palate that is both deep and long, framed by fine-grained tannins and energized by the trademark acidity of Mt. Veeder. Sourced primarily from the Upper Block, where the steep slope and dry farming practices yield fruit of exceptional concentration, and infused with the essence of the aromatic Yerba Santa lining the forest's edge, this Syrah is a treasure to be savored now and for decades to come.

The Enfield wines are some of the most structured, expressive and vibrant California wines I have ever tasted and makes you wonder why more California Cabernet is not made in the cooler climates of northern Sonoma Coast. Since 2010 John Lockwood has made a distinct name for himself with his laser focus on quality wines that convey the story of the place the fruit comes from. The Waterhorse Ridge Cabernet is all about expressing the high quality of the grapes and the soils. DonÕt expect overly spiced and concentrated Cabernet with this one. It is a markedly different style from its neighboring Napa that shows the vibrancy of wines coming from this niche coastal appellation.

Lodi, California is seeing a bit of a renaissance for quality wines and itÕs very exciting to watch from afar. If youÕre a fan of old-vine Zinfandels, perhaps this bottle made from 100 year old ungrafted vines will catch your attention. Patrick Cappiello is a young tatted up sommelier-turned-winemaker who got his roots grounded working under Pax Mahle of Pax Wines *swoon*. He took from Pax the philosophy of no additive and minimal intervention wines that prioritize earth over fruit. This is a truly elegant Zinfandel that whispers more Old World finesse than the typical jet fueled Zins that can come out of California.

The Whitcraft family cauldron always keeps us on our toes as the 2nd generation Drake Whitcraft continues to introduce various Dijon clones for his single vineyard wines that make each and every vintage stand out from the rest. These are not just incredible wines, they are collectorÕs items and I highly recommend snagging a few bottles to experience how they progress with age.

    • Antica Torino Dry Vermouth di Torino

Dry Vermouth di Torino rediscovers the old tradition of Torino manufacturers macerating ingredients in alcohol and distilling part of the maceration to give longevity and elegance to the final product. The recipe dates back to the 1950s, when the heart of Turin's economy was beating because of the aromatized wine industry. Wormwood, muscat yarrow, sage, thistle, and hyssop are among the ingredients that contribute to an explosion of flowery and herbal notes with a hint of spices. The taste is dry, soft, and warm, persistent with notes of cinnamon, flowers, sage, and almonds. Enjoy it straight on the rocks with an orange zest or blended in a gin or vodka martini.

    • Dolin "Rouge" Red Vermouth de Chambery

Dolin's red vermouth has a very long history, punctuated with many prizes and awards. It's unchanged recipe is one of our treasures. This vermouth has a lustrous coppery color, gentle aromas of fruit compote, of prunes and walnuts with grassy notes, tempered by spicy aromas like Szechwan pepper... then aromas of almond, citrus, pear and cinnamon with gingerbread, tobacco, oregano and hyssop notes. This very rich bouquet is tempered by a subtle bitter base wine. 30 to 40 spices and botanicals are used to make Dolin's famous red vermouth: coriander, hyssop, rhubarb and curacao are just some of those in a closely-guarded secret recipe. This French vermouth can be served as an aperitif on ice, a traditional before-dinner drink in France, but can also be a tasty ingredient in many cocktails, such as the famed Negroni or Manhattan.

    • Oka Kura Japanese Bermutto Sweet Red Sake Vermouth

A uniquely Japanese interpretation of a classic sweet red vermouth crafted by the Tsutsumi Distillery in the Kumamoto Prefecture in Kyushu, Japan. It is made from a Junmai sake base and fortified with 100% rice-based shochu, before being infused with botanicals such as yomogi (Japanese mugwort), yuzu, kabosu (a high acid citrus fruit), sansho peppercorn, and ume (Japanese green plum), and then sweetened with Okinawan cane sugar. The result is a profile richer and more robust than the drier, flagship Bermutto with aromas of stewed cherry, orange peel, brown sugar, and wood spice. The palate is bright and acidic with the kabosu and yomogi notably dialed up, lending notes of black tea, tart cherry, and citrus zest; the ume is prominent throughout, providing subtle marzipan and oxidized fruit notes similar to umeshu (Japanese plum liqueur).

    • Ferreira Dona Antonia 10 Years Old Tawny Port

Tawny color with reddish hues. Its intense, complex aroma is marked by the notes of ripe red fruits, jams, nuts and spices. On the palate, the wine is dense and rich, with delicate tannins, lively acidity, notes of spices and nuts, and a long finish with great balance and persistence. The wines are aged in traditional oak casks in Porto FerreiraÕs cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. During this period, they are frequently racked, analysed and tasted to monitor their evolution. After ageing, the final blend is made from a careful selection of wines, which are then clarified and stabilised before bottling. Served slightly chilled, it is the perfect accompaniment to rich starters such as foie gras, savoury vol-au-vents, or seafood gratin. It also pairs well with desserts such as crme bržlŽe or nuts.

    • El Maestro Sierra Oloroso Sherry

In 1832, the master carpenter JosŽ Antonio Sierra founded El Maestro Sierra. As one of the top coopers in the area, JosŽ Antonio made the barrels for all of the big Sherry houses. After years of making barrels for everyone else, he concluded that he could produce Sherries that were better than what the big Sherry houses were cranking out, so he opened up his own little winery. This little up-start Sherry producer was not welcomed into the world of nobility-owned Sherry houses, so the local gentry did everything they could to stop him. Fortunately, the quality of his sherry prevailed over their efforts, and JosŽ Antonio Sierra became one of the top Almacenistas (stockholders) of high-quality Sherry. Oloroso Sherry has incredibly complex aromas of hazelnuts and exotic spices. The label pokes fun at JosŽ Antonio's struggle by depicting an allegorical fox hunt with the nobles hunting El Maestro SierraÕs fox.

    • Valdespino "Inocente" Fino Sherry

With its source the great Macharnudo vineyard, Valdespino's Inocente is arguably Jerez's most iconic Fino. The wine's intensity defies description. While other Finos are fermented in tank, Inocente is like the great Finos of the past fermented in barrel with indigenous yeast. It then passes through its solera's ten stages or criaderas (as opposed to the 2-3 criaderas employed for most other finos). The wine at bottling has an average age around 10 years doubling or tripling the aging of most other Finos. As American Sherry authority Peter Liem has written, Inocente is a fino of exceptional complexity, depth and distinction, and it is no exaggeration to say that it is one of the sherry region's greatest wines.

A beautifully brilliant colour. At first the bouquet is rather discreet - a sign of youth - but then the freshness and elegance of the vintage comes through. Acacia, broom, and candied lemon aromas lead into a rich, botrytized bouquet with toasty overtones. On the palate, this wine is round, full, and well-balanced. The richness comes to the fore and the sweetness enhances the impression of elegance. The candied fruit (lemon) and quince jelly provide a refreshing prelude to the toasty, slightly spicy flavour. A perfect balance between power and elegance. A lovely, aromatic aftertaste. A classic Sauternes with great ageing potential.

    Restaurant info

At our core, we are a wine shop, a place to explore some of the top wines of Europe and beyond. We’ve worked tirelessly to source the wines we feature, tasting thousands to narrow them down to a rotating selection of 250 labels. We also feature a small, exciting mix of craft spirits, beer, and sake. Le Midi will bring to Chicago the Mediterranean tradition of l’heure de l’apéro: the time before or after dinner to sit back and relax with a glass of wine alongside a few choice bites meant to enhance your experience. Located in the vibrant Wicker Park neighborhood, we are an ideal stopping point for those who are looking to experience an evolving wine glass list of over 20 selections, enjoy a few remarkable bites, and explore a range of bottles to take home.
