The 2016 Syrah Rattlesnake Rock is a powerful wine. Red fruit, iron, chalk, white pepper, game and incisive tannins give the 2016 a real feeling of drive that distinguishes it in the range. This is an especially mineral-driven, savory, taut Syrah, with all the elements in the right place. Dried herbs, licorice and crushed flowers add aromatic intrigue. It will be interesting to see if the 2016 gains a bit more volume in bottle. It is such a promising wine. Syrah California/ Santa Cruz Mountains Sandstone Terrace refers not to our vineyard source for this wine, but to the underlying geology that makes the vineyard and wine special. Underneath the clay and sandy clay loams that characterize much of the southern Santa Cruz Mountains is a bed of weathered sandstone, mudstone and shale. These soils were formed on ancient marine terraces, whose close proximity to the coast give the wine it’s classy, cool-climate Syrah character.

Dark purple and and medium-full bodied. Brambleberry, anise, and smoked meat dominate the nose, while white pepper and black fruits follow on the palate. California/Monterey/CoastView Coastview Vineyard, situated on a ridgetop 2,300 feet up the Gabilan Mountains, is the predominant (90%) component of this wine. One of the most dramatically beautiful sites on the Central Coast, Coastview is a success story written by cool-climate syrah. Organically farmed, the thin soils of decomposed granite with veins of limestone are planted to chardonnay, pinot noir, grenache, Bordeaux varieties, and of course syrah.

Melanie Ananda Benedetti died shortly before harvest 2019, at age 44. The 2019 Ananda Pinot Noir is the end product of all the love, grief, sorrow, loss, and my desire to honor her by moving forward. I was a mess, and threw myself into harvest with only 1 clear objective: channel all of the above into something that can bring others joy amid sadness. Here is the result. She was made by first making a direct-pressed rosé from Split Rail Pinot Noir, and then moving the pressed skins into a fermenter, where another ton of Pommard clone from Split Rail was destemmed on top. The resulting fermentation was mellow and deliberate, a lot like Mel was, with amazing blue fruit aromas. Much later, a barrel of Lester Family Vineyard Pinot Noir was blended in during the wine’s 18 months of barrel aging. I love the wine, and Wine Enthusiast agreed, by giving her 94 pts

It's going to take 7-8 years to hit the early stages of maturity, but it's a brilliant wine. Coming in at close to equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the 2020 Château Malartic-Lagravière is another brilliant 2020 Pessac-Léognan with loads to offer. Expressive notes of red and black fruit, sweet tobacco, lead pencil, and camphor all emerge on the nose, and it's medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a forward, seamless, sexy profile that already offers pleasure. The tannins are present yet integrated and perfectly ripe, it's balanced, and I suspect it will evolve for a solid two decades or more. Tasted twice. The blend is 50.4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 47.8% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc that hit 14.2% natural alcohol.

It is aged 50% in barrels of 1 to 5 wines for 6 to 12 months, and 50% in stainless steel tanks. . 45% Carignan, 25% Grenache, 25% Mourvèdre, 5% Syrah France / Langeudoc / Corbières / Boutenac

As to the Grand Vin 2019 Château Pape Clement, it reveals a dense purple hue to go with stunning aromatics of crème de cassis, graphite, lead pencil shavings, scorched earth, and tobacco. Beautifully balanced, with flawless tannins, this full-bodied Pessac has that rare mix of elegance and power, a great mid-palate, and again, perfect balance. It's one of the gems of the vintage and has some accessibility today given its purity and balance, yet deserves 4-5 years of bottle age and will cruise for 20-25 years or more in cold cellars. An estate that has been on fire of late, the 2020 Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse De Lalande is another brilliant wine in a succession of brilliant wines. Revealing a dense purple hue as well as full-bodied aromas and flavors of blac currants, scorched earth, tobacco leaf, and violets, it hits the palate with an expansive, rich, yet pure, precise texture that carries fabulous tannins, perfect balance, and a stacked mid-palate. Based on 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Franc, it's an incredible wine that's going to flirt with perfection and is unquestionably one of the finest, if not the finest, Left Banks in the vintage. In the glass, the Roc de Cambes is a dark, nearly opaque garnet red with some encroaching orange at the rim betraying its age. Aromas of preserved black cherry, raspberry, black plum, cacao, ground coffee, bay leaf, and exotic spice jump from the glass and carry over to a polished and full-bodied palate which finishes with layers of nuanced earth notes. What distinguishes this from many ’09s I’ve tried is its focus and freshness: the ripeness is evident but it perfectly lifted by bright acidity. It is a beautifully constructed wine, with exquisitely managed tannins, that still has lots of gas in the tank: If drinking now, decant it about 30 minutes before serving in large Bordeaux stems next to a seared beef tenderloin in a simple pan sauce. One of the greatest wine yet from Anne, the incredible 2015 Minervois les Carretals is a blend of Carignan (from vines planted in 1909) and Grenache that's brought up all in French oak. It exhibits thrilling notes of black raspberry, liquid violets, salty minerality and hints of licorice to go with an ultra-pure, elegant, medium to full-bodied feel on the palate. Given the overall purity and quality of the texture, it's hard to resist now, yet I think it will be even better in another year or two, and evolve easily through 2025. It's a sweet luxury when you work with a winemaker who does double duty between her vineyards in Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre crafting compelling wines from both. We've been singing high praises for Annick's Pouilly-Fumé for years now and for whatever reason promoting her Frétoy Sancerre with a little less fanfare. Well I gotta' say it's time for that mentality to change. Annick's 2018 release is a thing of beauty sourced from 40-year old vines growing in flint and limestone soils. Pecorino "Sibillino" is an orange collered white wine produced by the Annesanti winery in Umbria that best expresses the intrinsic characteristics of the variety of the same name. Made with Chardonnay grapes harvested and vinified directly by the Pisoni family, this spumante is produced according to Metodo Classico with a second fermentation in the bottle - known as “champenoise” in France. Each bottle is dated and marked with the year of its vintage and degorgement. This spumante has an attractive, lustrous straw yellow colour with greenish tinges and a fine, timid yet persistent perlage. This wine is ample, refined and immediate on the nose, with fruity notes followed by flowery tones and concluding with an intense aroma created by the long period of contact between wine and yeast. The Nerthus has a delightfully bright pink colour with hints of salmon and fuschia and brilliant transparency. It’s visually very pleasing. Pecorino "Sibillino" is an orange collered white wine produced by the Annesanti winery in Umbria that best expresses the intrinsic characteristics of the variety of the same name. The careful manual selection of the grapes and a vinification without the use of added sulphites and selected yeasts allows to obtain an authentic and quality label. The colour is golden yellow with luminous reflections and the bouquet brings to mind white flowers, crunchy fruit and citrus notes. Louis XIV was among the first to sing the praises of Tavel’s delicious and memorable rosés, which only stands to reason given the appellation’s grand cru reputation today. Tavel is the only A.O.C. entirely made up of rosé, which prohibits any whites or reds from wearing the label of this Southern Rhône cru. This rosé hails from a single-parcel vineyard tucked back a bit from the coast and hidden among pines, wild lavender, and citrus trees. Dark red clay and an insulating layer of limestone rocks harbor the entire diverse collection of Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvèdre, and Syrah vines used in the field blend. Winemaker Jonathan Sack’s father has called Clos Sainte Magdeleine’s wine “Provençal sunshine in a glass,” but I’d add that this rosé has real depth. It’s a terroir-driven wine that evokes the very earth of Provence. As if the grapes were infused with that salty sea air and wild sagebrush, there are hints of each, along with crisp lemony nuances and a whole lot of those ripe little strawberries for sale at the roadside markets. “When my grandfather was a kid, the vines were already ancient,” says Alessandro Anfosso, estimating the surviving Rossese Bianco to be at least 150 years old. From thick, ungrafted trunks of this nearly extinct variety, Alessandro crafts a white wine similar to what his grandfather would have made. After four days fermenting on the skins, it is transferred to acacia casks, where it rests until an unfiltered bottling. The soft, sexy 2009 exhibits a dense plum/purple color along with a big, sweet bouquet of raspberries, black cherries, black currants, smoke and forest floor. Opulent and round with an attractive viscosity as well as outstanding purity, depth and length, it should drink well for two decades.
