Wine Bargains (Dinner)
- #1 - Jules Loren “Cuvee Reserve” Brut, NV, Vin de France$12.00
A great gift for Moms and Grads! It has a lovely perfumed nose of lemon drops, honeysuckle and peach blossoms with touches of apple pie and baking bread. The palate is elegant, fresh, zippy and invigorating. $12
- #2 - Casal Garcia Vinho Verde, 2023, Minhos, Portugal Liter bottle!!$10.00
Spring in a bottle! AND it’s a big bottle! Big high five to the Portuguese for over delivering on the wine front. This fresh, fun, spritely white is all citrus zest, fresh spring flowers and green apple. The nose is simply beautiful, just what you want from this type of wine. Unoaked, this comes in at just 9.5%, which will make it something particularly useful for a hot, summer day. This is a pleasure to drink, and don’t hesitate. It may hold a while, but it will never show better than when fresh. Bravo!! $10
- #3 - Carmel Road Sauvignon Blanc, 2023, California$14.00
We enjoy all of the Carmel Road wines and have featured them regularly but just recently tasted their delicious Sauvignon Blanc. It has a core of green tropical fruits with tones of lemongrass, beeswax and dried herbs. The medium-bodied palate is textural and rounded, with hints of apple blossom finish. $14
- #4 - Terre del Barolo Arneis, 2022, Piedmont, Italy$14.00
Arneis (ar-NACE) is a bit of a rare grape in Piedmont, which is a shame because it makes fantastic wines. Pretty aromas of minerals, white peaches, flowers, and pears in its lovely, medium-bodied, deliciously fruity personality. It is not meant to age, but will pair beautifully with sushi, grilled octopus, fresh white fish and veggie pastas. $14
- #5 - Santa Julia Organica Chardonnay, 2023, Mendoza, Argentina Organically farmed!!$13.00
Santa Julia is the largest producer of organic grapes in Mendoza. This Chardonnay is made in an unoaked, fresh style. Lots of Granny Smith apple, orange blossom and pear. It’s a great spring and summer style that will work well with steamed mussels, veggie stir fry, or roasted salmon. $13
- #6 - Perrin Cotes du Rhone Rosé, 2023, Rhone Valley, France$14.00
The Perrin family (of Chateau de Beaucastel fame) craft this beauty from Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah & Cinsault sourced from their Le Grand Prebois vineyard in Orange. Spice, Bing cherries, mulberries and floral notes all emerge from this medium-bodied, fresh, yet nicely textured and balanced beauty that's ideal for drinking over the coming summer. It’s a great match for all sorts of picnic fare. $14
- #7 - C'est La Vie Pinot Noir Syrah, 2021, Languedoc, France$12.00
A new wine from Albert Bichot that is really fun and an excellent bistro style red. It’s a 60% Pinot Noir & 40% Syrah blend that is sourced from vineyards in the south of France near the Mediterranean. Juicy cherry and red raspberry fruit, some nice cinnamon and baking spice on the soft, ripe finish. Drop it in an ice bucket for 10 minutes and enjoy with all your favorite Mediterranean fare. $12
- #8 - Domaine de Cristia Grenache, 2022, Provence, France$15.00
Baptiste Grangeon is an absolute rockstar making spectacular wines in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. He has a value line of wines sourced from vineyards just south of the Rhone that get the same love and care as the top cuvees at a fraction of the price. This beauty has loads of ripe strawberry fruit and some pepper spice in a rich, medium bodied format that is just spectacular with barbecued chicken and grilled veggies & flank steak. $15
- #9 - Ca del Sarto Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, 2021, Abruzzi, Italy$13.00
Montepulciano is our favorite “easy to understand and even easier to drink” style of red from Italy. It reminds us of a great house wine. This bottling has pretty red cherry and blackberry fruit, spice and aromas of cigar box & dried herbs. Pairs perfectly with pizza, pasta & classic Italian dishes. $13
- #10 - Justin Malbec Petit Verdot, 2022, Bordeaux, France$14.00
Ok, just to clear up any confusion, this is not the same Justin winery in California. No relation at all. This is an unique Bordeaux blend of Malbec & Petit Verdot that is fantastic. It has dark blueberry and cherry fruit and a hint of pepper. The package is cute with a couple of dogs sitting at the bar enjoying wine. What’s not to love? $14
- #11 - Ruelas Reserva Tinto, 2020, Lisboa, Portugal$14.00
This wine is a ton of fun. It’s a blend of Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, & Syrah. It's fresh and fruity, with just a bit of tannic bite. It’s quaffable and easy to understand, but the structure is very good for the level, and the vivid, fruit-forward finish makes this extremely delicious and maybe a little Beaujolais-esque. Drink it with meatloaf, ham and seared tuna. $14
- #12 - Lobetia Cabernet Sauvignon, 2022, Castilla La Mancha, Spain Organically farmed!!$13.00
We’re BIG fans of the Lobetia wines. They’re always a great value, now even more so with this wine being a liter bottle. The nose is that of a textbook Cabernet, with its blackberry, cedar wood, mint and plenty of spice aromas. The palate is medium bodied and shows the refined tannins from the variety, making the wine quite tasty, balanced, fresh and easy to drink. $13 / Liter bottle
- ***Barossa Valley Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, 2021, Barossa, Australia$12.00
Barossa Cabernet is always a commanding style of wine but also highly expressive and wonderfully complex. There are wonderful flavors of dark plum, black currant, with nice spice and ripe tannin on the finish.
- ***Bliss Zinfandel, 2021, Mendocino, California$14.00Out of stock
Zinfandel. As American as hot dogs, baseball and apple pie. Don’t BBQ without it. Burgers are so much better with a glass of Zinfandel. Briary, brambly, and oh so delicious. This one is from the cool climate vineyards of Mendocino in northern California. The wine reveals an earthy, spicy bouquet with scents of raspberries, cherries, and strawberries. Medium to full-bodied with good briery fruit, an edgy note, decent acidity, nice spice, and true varietal character, it will provide plenty of smiles over the next 3-4 years.
- ***Casteller Cava Rosé, NV, Penedes, Spain$15.00
Jeanine’s favorite value sparkling wine! Made from the Trepat grape, this bubbly is loaded with fresh strawberry and floral notes. 12 months aging on the lees gives wonderful texture to the bubbles. Wildly versatile with regard to food pairing. But fried chicken is one of our faves!
- ***d'Arenberg "Stump Jump" Cabernet Sauvignon, 2021, McLaren Vale, Australia$12.00Out of stock
In a blind tasting, I would have pegged this wine as Bordeaux. It has ripe black currant and spiced plum fruit with a core of cedar and dried tobacco. It is elegant and a bit serious in its approach. A lovely match for stews and roasted beef or lamb.
- ***Elvio Tintero "Grangia" Vino Bianco, NV, Piedmont, Italy$12.00
Many people will skip this wine because it doesn't have a recognizable name or even grapes. But that would be a huge mistake. It’s frizzante and fun and absolutely perfect for spring. Our friends at Kermit Lynch who import the wine said, “Pure, unadulterated sunshine in a bottle, this blend of Favorita, Arneis, Chardonnay and Moscato synergistically creates arguably the most easy-drinking white wine we import. It may be all things to all people: dry, yet with a succulent summer orchard fruitiness; smooth and creamy, yet bouncing with a sprightly pétillance; aromatically complex and thought-provoking, yet entirely gulpable. Soak it in!” Don’t miss it!!
- ***Fattoria San Lorenzo Trebbiano, 2022, Abruzzo, Italy$14.00
A lovely fresh clean white that has a loads of pear, peach pit, and apricot flavors. There’s some nice spice and a hint of beeswax on the finish. Perfect with white pizza, seafood pasta and chicken and pesto.
- ***Four Vines Petite Sirah, 2021, California$13.00
There’s nothing petite about petite sirah. This monster is like Rambo in a glass. Deep, inky purple color with aromas of fig, roasted hazelnuts and boysenberry. It is big and lush and full bodied with oodles of fruit, spice and ripe tannin. Begs for BBQ.
- ***Goats do Roam White, 2022, Western Cape, South Africa$14.00
A fun play on the “Cotes du Rhone”, this blend of Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne & Roussanne is a dead ringer for the French white. This fresh white is brimming with honeysuckle, pineapple, melon and mango flavors. The finish is crisp and bright and clean. Pairs well with rotisserie chicken (Hey Costco!), Asparagus with Hollandaise or white fish.
- ***Grayson Chardonnay, 2022, California$13.00
Boom. Full on, Steve Wecker approved, tropical fruit style of California Chardonnay. It’s a perennial Best Buy in the wine press. There’s loads of pineapple and mango, good medium bodied richness along with some baking spice, butter and vanilla on the finish.
- ***Hecht & Bannier Red Blend, Languedoc, France$14.00
This wine is a classic Rhone blend of Syrah, Grenache & Carignane. It has a deep ruby color followed by classic notes of peppery herbs and juicy berry fruits. Medium-bodied, concentrated, and deliciously quaffable, it’s a perfect mid-week drinker. Pair it with grilled sausages, pot roast or duck or game.
- ***Lapiz Luna Pinot Noir, 2022, California$14.00Out of stock
This is a juicy, smooth, polished, fruit forward style of Pinot Noir with ripe cherry and blueberry fruit, violets and dusty cocoa and a lush finish with no hard edges. It’s super yummy (technical wine term)This is a juicy, smooth, polished, fruit forward style of Pinot Noir with ripe cherry and blueberry fruit, violets and dusty cocoa and a lush finish with no hard edges. It’s super yummy (technical wine term) and is going to be great with BBQ Chicken Pizza, Grilled Salmon or Roasted Pork.
- ***Maggio Family Cabernet Sauvignon, 2021, Lodi, California$13.00
Why two Cabernets on the list this month? Well, they’re quite different stylistically. The Maggio is sourced from warm vineyards in Lodi and is big, burly and lush with flavors of boysenberry pie, cinnamon and cocoa, toasty oak and firm, ripe tannins. Begs for burgers and barbecue.
- ***Maison Trenel Beaujolais, Burgundy, France$14.00
Beaujolais has springtime written all over it. There are lots of perfumed floral aromas along with juicy black cherry and blueberry flavors. The finish is round with no hard edges. Fantastic with all of your picnic favorites; cheese and charcuterie, ham & cheese sandwiches, and grilled vegetables.
- ***Mandriola Red, Lisboa, Portugal$11.00
Another amazing value from Portugal. Don’t snooze on this one! A blend of Syrah, Alicante Bouchet and Touriga Nacional, this wine is rich and complex with dark plum and blackberry notes, a hint of rustic leather and cigar box with some spice and ripe tannin on the finish. Great with tacos, meatloaf, or burgers.
- ***Nekora Verdejo, 2021, Rueda, Spain$14.00Out of stock
Fresh, light, crisp and bright, this organically farmed Verdejo shows lots of citrus fruit & orange blossom. It’s a fantastic Pinot Grigio alternative that works wonders with oysters, crab dishes & salad.
- ***Old Soul Sauvignon Blanc, 2023, Lodi, California$15.00
This Sauvignon from very warm Lodi has lots of melon, orange citrus and some tropical fruit notes (like guava, maybe?). Some of the fruit is harvested early to give the wine balance and brightness. There’s a bit of French oak aging to add some spice and a hint of toast. Lovely paired with goat cheese salad, fresh seafood or spring veggies.
- ***Promesses Pinot Noir, 2022, Vin de France$13.00
Sourced from vineyards in the south of France and some from cooler sites farther north gives a wine with lovely balance. The light ruby color is followed by aromas of raspberry and strawberry on the nose. The palate has elegant notes of raspberry tea, cinnamon and spice. Perfect with roast turkey, salmon or mushroom anything.
- ***Secret Cellars Chardonnay, 2021, Central Coast, California$14.00
I love this Chardonnay for its balance. It is sourced from cool Central Coast vineyards so there’s lovely red apple, roast pear and lemon curd fruit. It sees some French oak aging which gives some baking spices and a bit of toastiness. And partial malolactic fermentation gives us some notes of butter and baked apple pie. The whole combination comes together beautifully. We love this wine with meatier fish, mac-n-cheese & pork tenderloin.
- ***Tassajara Chardonnay, 2022, Monterey, California$15.00Out of stock
The name Tassajara comes from the famed Tassajara Hot Springs, where legend has it the Indigenous peoples would go for renewing spiritual energy. Form vineyards close to the ocean in Monterey, the wine has flavors of yellow apple, stone fruit & pear, accented by hints of vanilla & caramel. On the palate, it is medium bodied, crisp & balanced with bright fruit & lingering notes of sweet oak on the finish.
- ***Terra Firma "Belsetan" Garnacha, 2020, Aragon, Spain$13.00Out of stock
This 100% Garnacha (aka Grenache) is a ripe, juicy and heady red. It has a mixture of red and black fruit, clean, with a spicy touch. The palate is medium to full-bodied with fine-grained tannins and very tasty flavors. It’s fantastic with Peruvian chicken, Asian dumplings or even smoky grilled brisket.
- ***The Icon Rock Chardonnay, 2022, Mendoza, Argentina$13.00Out of stock
This is a new brand that we absolutely loved. The Chardonnay is sourced from a single vineyard in the Uco Valley of Mendoza. It sees some oak and has partial malo-lactic fermentation that gives it some buttered popcorn notes, but it maintains great balance. There’s plenty of pineapple, pear & baking spice. Pair it with Chicken Alfredo, Anything involving Mushroom & Roast Salmon.
